Turning the Corner
This nondescript two-story in De Soto, Kansas, experienced such an
impressive upgrade, you'd swear the house gained square footage.
What it actually gained is even more appealing: a wraparound porch, a
second entrance, and an Arts and Crafts sensibility.
The style was established by doubling the length of the roof
overhangs (now 24 inches) oil all sides and adding knee braces under
each eave. The roof of the new porch displays similar styling but with
a shallower slope. Tapered columns on stone bases arc another nod
to Arts and Crafts styling.
Roomy enough for two sitting areas, the porch created a
natural spot for a second entrance— French doors that open to
the dining room. Wide cedar-planking steps strengthen the home's
connection to the side yard.
Another striking indoor-outdoor improvement was the addition
of a second, matching dormer to the front of the house. It's positioned
right above the entry, which is open to the upper level. “It worked
out nicely to get daylight into the entry and add some interest to the
outside of the house,'1
